What is an ITIN?

Individual tax payer identification number (ITIN) is a number for processing your federal income tax returns. The number is issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) – an institute responsible to collect taxes. Individuals who need to file their tax returns but do not have or are not eligible to have a social security number (SSN) due to being undocumented immigrant studying or working in USA, should apply for an individual taxpayer identification number.

In order to pay the taxes, you need an ITIN, which will be issued to you regardless of your immigration status. You need to apply for your tax ID number only if you have a tax filing requirement. To file taxes we use our tax and accounting division called Freedomtax Accounting.

What is the format of an ITIN?

It is a nine-digit number often confused with an SSN due to the similar appearance of these two numbers. Both of them have nine digits but an individual taxpayer identification number begins with a 9 and usually has a 7 or 8 at the fourth position, for example, 9XX-7X-XXXX or 9XX-8X-XXXX.

Who needs to apply?

Individuals who do not qualify for a SSN are required to have an ITIN for reporting their taxes. These cases include:

A non-resident US alien who does not have a social security number
A foreign national who is a member of a US LLC (Limited Liability Company)
A US resident (based on days present in the US) who is not eligible to get a SSN
Spouse or dependent of a citizen of the US
Spouse or dependent of a foreigner having valid visa

What is the use of ITIN?

Your individual taxpayer identification number is not a valid form of your legal identity. By law, it must be used for paying taxes only. It is not intended to function anywhere else. However, you can show it to the banks for identification purposes while opening a bank account. Some states in the US also accept it for issuing a driver’s license.

How to apply?

The IRS issues a W-7 application form, you need to get this form and fill it in. You must attach a US tax return to this application. The application requires you to submit your original passport and birth certificate and certified copies of other documents. Documents attached; must be recent and one of them must have your photograph.

You need to submit this application to the IRS which takes 6-8 weeks to process it. After completing the processing, IRS sends you a letter that contains your tax identification number. In case of any delay, you may call to the IRS and find out your application status. While applying for your tax ID number, you may also take help from an Acceptance Agent who is authorized by the agency.

Who is an Acceptance Agent?

IRS has authorized a few individuals and organizations to assist people in obtaining their individual taxpayer identification numbers. Acceptance Agents are; in this regard, responsible to review your application and make it accurate for IRS processing.

If you need to file your federal tax returns and want to apply for an ITIN, the above information may help you in carrying out the procedure successfully.
